President's Message
Greetings ASSAMT
Members,
Winter is here; another
year has passed by. We have been blessed to survive 2009. Life is a
series of changes and these changes require adaptive responses. Stress
is a natural reaction of the body to any demand, pleasant or unpleasant.
Stress is normal and in fact necessary for a vital life. Prolonged
stress can wear you down and produce burnout. It can lead to physical
problems, such as migraine headaches, ulcers, high blood pressure, or
serious illnesses. Too many negative or positive changes stimulate the
production of certain hormones and chemicals that affect the body. The
solution is not to avoid stress, but to acknowledge it directly and
learn to manage and channel it. Nothing reduces stress like a hearty
laugh or spontaneous fun. Laughing produces endorphins, natural
chemicals that strengthen the immune system and produce a sense of
well-being. Laughter also increases oxygen flow to the brain and causes
positive physiological changes.
Working full-time can be
demanding; long working hours; deadlines, meetings, and lack of time can
play havoc with your health. The ability to manage stress, maintain
health and increase energy is critical for job success. Being alert,
physically fit, energized, calm, and clear-headed are critical for
making sound decisions. These are just some food for thought.
The fall meeting was
held in Mobile on Saturday, September 26, 2009, and it was most
informative. It was so good to see so many new faces. I want to thank
David Betts and Rikki Packer for an outstanding job in planning the fall
meeting. We elected a new secretary, Mr. Cedric Swinney, MT. Thank you
for coming aboard. Special thanks to Nikki Parsons that moved to
Virginia, who assisted in planning the fall meeting.
Let me remind you of
upcoming meetings: Magnolia Educational Treasure will convene at the
Majestic Beach Resort, Panama City, Florida February 25-27, 2010. Please
see details elsewhere in this journal for registration and billeting
information. AMT’s 72nd Educational Program and National
Meeting will be held at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa at
Summerlin, July 12-17, 2010. Next year’s fall state society meeting will
take place at Virginia College, Montgomery Saturday September 25, 2010
to include election of officers. More details to follow.
Let me take this
opportunity to welcome our new members. I hope we get the opportunity to
meet you at an upcoming meeting. This is your state society and I
encourage you to take an active part.
I want to leave you with
a little holiday humor:
Two lumberjacks were
working in the sawmill one afternoon. Ralph got too close to the saw
blade and it cut his arm off. Fred thought that if the limb was put in
plastic and taken with the body it could be reattached, so he quickly
wrapped up the arm and rushed to the hospital with Ralph. The next day
he went to visit his friend and was amazed at what modern medical
technology could do when he saw Ralph playing tennis.
A few months later Ralph
and Fred were back to work at the sawmill. Again, Ralph leaned too close
to the saw blade and this time his leg was cut off. Fred did the same as
last time, wrapping the leg in plastic and rushing Ralph to the
hospital. The next day he was thrilled to see Ralph taking a walk.
“Isn’t medical technology wonderful,” he said to himself. A few weeks
later Ralph and Fred were in the sawmill. While trying to lift a log off
the ground, Ralph’s head came too close to the saw blade and he was
decapitated. By now, Fred was an old hand at this. He wrapped up the
head and took off for the hospital. The following day he went looking
for Ralph, wondering what he might be up to after this latest medical
go-around. When he could not find him, he called Ralph’s doctor to learn
of his whereabouts. The doctor shook his head and said “Oh yes, poor
Ralph. I’m sorry to say he didn’t make it…We could have saved him but
some idiot put his head in a plastic bag and he suffocated.”
I want to wish everyone
a safe holiday.
Respectfully,
Debra C. Jackson, RMA
